Corset pour le dos invisible

A true and proven alternative to back pain

With low back pain taking over the world, finding a solution that allows patients to feel better while maintaining their mobility has become a societal challenge.

Over the course of 30 years, the Daum back therapy has helped over 12.000 in their quest to feel comfortable again without sacrifing their daily activities.

A global issue

According to multiple studies, low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, with a prevalence of 80% worldwide.

Leading cause of disability

Low back pain has been determined to be the leading cause of disability as well as the #1 cause of work absenteeism. Disability is also known to affect the quality of life of patients.

A heavy burden for society

The estimated annual cost of low back pain for society is $600 billion. That includes many direct and indirect costs such as loss of productivity, medical costs, social security costs, or replacement costs. The financial burden is all but negligible.

Powerless patients

Years of pain

The patients we meet have usually been suffering for 15 years. They’ve tried everything: physical therapy, infiltrations, painkillers, surgery, other back braces. Nothing is working and they’re starting to feel very lonely.

Very little comfort

A lot of the patients we meet claim that they only feel comfortable lying down or sitting down with pillows supporting their lower back. Everything else hurts.

Fear of the wrong movement

Because of the pain they’re experiencing, patients tend to avoid moving for fear that the wrong movement is going to cost them dearly. The less they move, the more they weaken, the more they’re afraid. It’s a vicious cycle.

What needs to be done?

Providing patients with a long term solution that will not only make them feel better but also actually make them better requires two different components.

Relief

For most patients, the immediate need is for the pain to stop. Or to go down. They need support that alleviates the weak intervertebral segment and allows their spine to relax.

Mobility

A crucial part of spine health is movement. Most studies advocate for a multidisciplinary approach that involves exercises in order to strengthen the back, which, in turn, helps the patient stay mobile and helps deal with the pain.

The Daum Brace

How it works

The Daum brace’s uniqueness comes from the fact that it alleviates the weakened segments of the spine by redistributing the weight on two lateral pistons that act as pillars and shock absorbers.

The weight distribution, which can be adjusted daily by the patient, provides pain relief while the pneumatic system ensures maximum mobility for the patient. This allows them to feel better and be actors of their own therapy.

How we work

Every Daum brace is custom-made and handbuilt to suit the needs and specificities of patients. Each patient is being examined and fitted, and their brace is built in real time to make sure nothing is left to chance.

Regular follow-up visits are a crucial part of the therapy as the orthosis needs to be adjusted according to the evolution of the patient’s morphology. If the brace is working, so are we.

2023 clinical study

We performed a prospective longitudinal study on the use of the DAUM brace in a consecutive series of 79 cases with low back pain in subjects with a variety of diagnoses. 28% of the subjects had undergone surgery prior to using the brace, others hadn’t. Patient were enrolled from February till October 2023 and three outcome measures were analyzed: pain (VAS), disability (Oswestry score), and depression (Zung score).

The findings of this study have been presented at the 2023 edition of the BISS (Brussels International Spine Symposium) by F.P. Collignon, MD-PhD, head of neurosurgery at Delta Hospital and Parc Leopold Hospital in Brussels.

Pain Score (VAS)

VAS score experienced a substantial reduction of 3.39, declining from an average of 6.98 on day 1 to 3.6 on day 180 (t(78) = 14.76, p < 0.0001).

This reflects a considerable reduction in pain levels.

Disability Score (Oswestry)

Secondly, the Oswestry score saw a significant decrease, dropping from an average of 45.0% on day 1 to 31.2% on day 180 (t(78) = 10.59, p < 0.0001).

This signals an improvement in functional disability among the participants.

Depression Score (Zung)

The Zung score exhibited a remarkable reduction, shifting from an average of 45.6% on day 1 to an average of 36.2% on day 180 (t(78) = 7.5, p < 0.0001).

This indicates a positive trend in the psychological well-being of participants.

Our analysis revealed a significant correlation between the changes in Oswestry and VAS scores over the 180 days. Similarly, the alterations in Zung scores correlated significantly with changes in Oswestry scores. Importantly, none of these parameter changes showed any correlation with the age of participants.

These findings collectively suggest promising outcomes associated with the use of our medical device, particularly in terms of psychological well- being, functional disability, and pain management over the study period.
